I haven't had a break like that, but when I was living in this supported accommodation place, most everyone there had experienced something like that at some point.
One of my friends started walking around with a baseball bat becuase he got to thinking people were trying to hurt him. We... Well... I... Called the cops and they came got him and he went into hospital for a time... Then his meds got sorted out and he was back to his usual self.
You might be surprised at how many people know people like that, in their lives. Even though they might not have understood what was going on when they were teenagers, they might understand more, retrospectively.
I think everyones got some stuff they regret.
