Yes he is. And what a crazy scene here in the states--We were back east (that is what we say here, 'back' east) and the world had gone mad. In our town, w/in hours, a Sikh was almost mobbed by a crowd and removed from the Amtrak train in handcuffs--or was it, yes, it was the feet thing, too. (Never mind that the mayor of the whole city was a felon, and is again a felon, relieved of his position and in jail as I write.) He (the Sikh) had a 'gasp' knife 'concealed' in his head wrap which was indelicately removed from his head by the group of morning commuters. We lived in a fine, liberal two-private university town. Everyone on every faculty was afraid to say a single f-n' word. For months! And months! It was unreal. And here was this one guy who just basically spoke his own opinion, aka 'free-speech'--quite a foundational concept here. He was quite infamous.
Most unnerving of all, beside the street-level hysteria, was the absolute dreadful silence. "Silence=Death" had already been circulated widely by, I think, the gay rights movement. Intellectually, I knew that silence accompanied violations--but had never felt it before. I will never forget.
And (wow, sorry for that blast) BTW, I have not read any of his books yet. I love the title "I Don't Believe in Atheists".
Have you read that end of literacy book?
And Henri Giroux...that rings a bell....
TruthOut?
