We use a similar thing in Autism therapeutic treatment. Actually, in the 'sensory' room, kids with Autism encounter very fine strings of coloured light, in tubes. The purpose is to get as much stimulation, controlled without irritation. Our area's child pdoc is also using Serzone with some success. It's the whole 5ht2a blocking that seems to work well. Small doses of Risperdal (.25 to 1mg)also seem to work on this receptor without too much antagonization of the dopamine receptors.(I think it only blocks the D2 receptor, at this low dose.)
