I sympathize with your wanting a dog, rose. But I also sympathize with your roommates feeling that if they (or one of them) doesn't want a dog, it would be unfair to bring one in.
That wasn't the agreement when you roomed together, and unilaterally changing the agreement at this point seems wrong. I'm sure your roommates want you to be happy, but they just wouldn't be happy with the dog there.
It's really a shame that it's not possible. But if you think it really would make a big difference, maybe you could move somewhere else. Or, if the complex has rules against dogs, maybe you could find a place where pets are okay.
