You're second-guessing yourself to death. You made perfectly understandable decisions about what to say and do for perfectly legitimate reasons. Maybe there were better options, maybe not. So what? And you're falling all over yourself to let your employer know you want to work. What more can they ask?
Give yourself a break - you're doing the best you can in trying circumstances! I can't say I'd do any better were I in a pickle like that. Dumb? Not a chance!
