I'm afraid that I take after my father in having an overly generous amount of sweat glands. (Nikki, you might not have noticed, but I was perspiring like mad when we met!)

By some mean twist of fate, my sense of smell has become exquisitely sensitive. Next year I may try truffle hunting...
My point is that my armpits smell horribly by the end of the day. Going without underarm protection is only an option if I am completely secluded and plan to change the bedsheets after I awake. It's made worse by my age (44, hello hot flashes) and location (Florida). My way of coping is to shower in the morning, use an antibacterial soap under my arms, then wear one deodorant on top of another deodorant/antiperspirant. Even at that, I'm constantly nonchalantly lifting one arm and sniffing it like a bunch of fresh flowers. If I feel too gross by the end of the day, I'll take another shower.

Living in England was an olfactory experience the likes I'd never known. I actually stocked up on underarm deodorants and antiperspirants when I'd go back to the states for holidays. I found the products in the UK smelled really lovely, but didn't so much treat the underlying odour as much as add an additional smell to it. Sometimes it could make me wretch.

ps I don't make a practice of smelling people when I meet and greet. The exception is my brother in law, so smells so foul that my sweet little kitty cat bites him when she's had a whiff. Oh, all right; the cat's name IS Psycho. But really!
