I've found salon shampoos to make a HUGE difference in the texture of my hair. I like Redken or Nexxus, but I'm sure there's many other good ones.

Its also good to use as little heat as possible on your hair. Limit your use of: hot water, blow dryer, curling irons, hot rollers, hairspray. All this dries out your hair. I try to only use hot rollers and hairspray for going out rather than everyday.

There are also products to give your hair extra shine like Frizz Ease, or any of a number of salon brands of shiny hair product.

Do you have a hairdresser? Someone in the know can recommend the best products for your hair. Don't let them talk you into a ton of expensive stuff though. Tell them you're on a budget and would like to know what would be the best, most economical thing to spend your money on for shiny hair.

There are beauty supply stores that have specials, which is the time to stock up. You can get salon shampoo for the same price as store brands if you buy by the liter. There's a place called Ulta that I go to that has specials like that twice a year.

Even if you don't get it on special though, they are usually way more concentrated than store brand shampoos and conditioners, so its more economical than it seems. I usually add water to my shampoo to thin it out some so I won't use too much.

You also have to work with the type of hair you have, and accept that you have certain limits. For instance, mine is very thick, so I will never get that wispy look. Its just not going to happen. I have to keep that in mind when I'm looking at new hairstyles.
