In reply to wedding/engagement rings: which finger/ hand?, posted by saturn on May 20, 2006, at 18:03:27
As far as I know, the only ring-finger that means anything is the left-hand "ring finger" next to the baby finger. Women who have an engagement ring and wedding ring wear them both on that finger generally. Men who have a wedding ring wear it on that finger also.
To confuse the issue, I think that in Europe it's the right-hand "ring finger" where the wedding ring is worn.
During my wedding ceremony, when it was my turn to put the ring on my husband's finger, he didn't hold his hand out, so I took his hand & put the ring on it. Turned out - & we didn't realize it until outside afterwards when photos were being taken - that I put it on his right hand!! Someone asked "Oh - so are you using the right-hand ring finger as they do in Europe?" I was mortified & took the ring off that finger & put it on the "proper" one!!!!!!!!
These days people wear rings on any finger - thumbs & toes also.
