Canine sensitivity

I wonder how many other dog owners experience this...

My dog (a border collie) could be in another room in my house but when I start silently crying, he'll immediately come to me, put his front paws in my lap and whine while looking me directly in the eyes. It never fails to amaze me how in tune he is to my feelings.

Is this common or is he a miracle?
