Wow. I guess I'm not the only one with this gripe. Thanks for the commiseration.
Bugs me from an indignant "Nobody else's business, don't make assumptions" point of view. But also makes me bummed when I'm lonely by making me feel like I'm out of the norm. If no distinctions were made, then maybe I'd feel like we're all considered okay, married or not. That's my personal insecurity oozing out.About the ma'am thing. I was in my mid twenties when I moved south. It was a shocker to suddently be called ma'am all the time by kids working in stores. After a while I got used to it. It's a standard of politeness not used where I grew up. Still, the occasional "miss" is nice. And it never hurts to get carded.
