In reply to The world's easiest quiz ..., posted by saw on September 10, 2004, at 2:18:47

And here are a couple of explanations, just because they interested me...

Remember, they didn't fight all the time. There was the planting season, the harvest season, the fighting season, and so on. Mostly, life went on with a few months of pitched battles now and again. Joan of Arc fought in this war.

Y'all know how I feel about *this* one, but it's usually sheep, not horses. Anyway, it's quite often synthetic, anyway, nowadays. (The fibers in violin and cello strings, though, are still horse hair.)

It's "Canary" like "Canid", not canary like the bird...

And this is the one I really wanted to explain, because it's sentimental. Prince Albert was not the eldest son, that was Edward VIII -- who abdicated in order to marry Wallis Simpson, the American divorcee. Albert changed his name because Victoria had requested that there be no future King Albert, in memory of her late husband, Prince Albert. When Albert came to the throne through his brother's abdication, he took the name George in deference to her wish. He was still called Bertie, though, by scandal sheets and friends.

Lest anyone think I passed the test easily, I didn't. George VI, Canary Islands, Hundred Year's War, and cat gut were the only one's I remembered offhand. Although I did know that none of them were obvious...

Thanks for the chuckle.
