In this case, I believe this particular behavior is a combination of both innate and learned behaviors. That is, I do believe that there are specific genes that play a role in this chicken's disorder - however, I also believe that there must be some external environmental factors that triggered our chicken's symptoms - i.e., continuosly crossing the road.
So, Lou, we see the compulsion in the form of crossing the road --- but, what is the obsession leading to this compulsion? Could it be an obsession with the fear of being eaten as suggested by a previous poster? Does he get to one side of the road, fear someone will pull up with a hotwings trolly - then run to the other side of the road just to have the same fear with an underlying belief that the other side may be safter?
Is the problem really that we just don't have an FDA approved SSRI for Poultry?

P.S. - Thanks for allowing me into your chicken discussion -- it has brought a laugh and smile into my day!
