I sometimes compare my parents to Ray's parents in Everybody Loves Raymond. My father loves that show, and loves to comment on the father's remarks. My husband and I have to work hard at not laughing. My father even *looks* like Peter Boyle. And while my mother doesn't wear makeup or dress well, she likes to show her love in the way that suits herself, without any real regard for how it affects anyone else. Just like Marie. If you took it up a notch in the cruelty of remarks (I don't think Frank threatens to kill Marie, and Marie seems to genuinely love Frank - and vice versa), it's a reasonably good comparison.
But then I see George Costanza's parents on Seinfeld, and I think "Now there's the perfect comparison". The yelling level is better in that couple.
Now I need to find my husband and me. I know we used to watch Mad About You a lot because we identified so much. The timing was perfect in stage of life stuff. I think we're a more companionate couple though. You know how there are "types" of couples? I can't remember the technical name right now. I'll have to look it up. But we fall very firmly into the companionate category. I guess that's what comes from knowing each other forever and being friends first.
