We have the jelly and ice cream next to each other, not one balanced on top fo the other.. when I was a kid the jelly was normally made (oh the 70's were a great time) in a rabbit shaped mold *laughing* Normally the rabbit would be red, or orange, on lime flavoured jelly grass!!
Also, here, jelly comes in cubes.. you get a pack of it, rectangular, I guess 5" by 3" or so.. its like really firm jelly. You then cut it into the cubes its shaped in, and then put on hot water (and add vodka now I'm grown up *l*), put it in a mold to set!!
I have made totally home made jelly before.. one with champagne that was wonderful! I just love the texture of it!!
