First some scenery:
It's 1992, I've been laid off; I've been job hunting for about four months; sending out a minimum of 50 resumes -- with indivially crafted cover letters -- per week, every week; contacting every employment agency and recruiter I can find; volunteering with professional organizations to try to make productive contacts; broke; depressed; and generally feeling pretty helpless.
OK, this won't beat your grandmother, but my aunt came close:
"You know, what you really should do is get a job, then you wouldn't be depressed. Why don't you just go out and get a job?"
[visual: me, with crossed eyes]
You'd never guess she worked for the goverment, would you? Ain't Civil Service a great thing?
