Consulting does sound like a very good step back to work. I have considered calling people who I have worked for in the past, and doing something similar. I have to keep reminding myself that no-one has implied that I am ready for work yet. I would say that if your therapist believes it is a good idea, then go for it. You will have the benefit not only of a job, but you will be working for yourself, and that has certain tax advantages, as well as the boost to your self esteem.
