On the local news, one of the victims looking at her burnt house said something to the effect that her family was safe, and this was all just stuff.

I had a slightly similar epiphany watching the movie 28 days, where a guy wakes up and it seems all humanity is dead. It made me realize.. how would the meaning of 'stuff' be different if all the people were gone? Would you bother to go loot a jewelry store? Not at all. What stuff would have any meaning, beyond the practical value of food, shelter, and basic clothing? There would be nobody to impress with your stuff, or your pretty clothes, or your nice car. The only value would be basic survival, and finding other humans.
