Like Racer, I'm in the Silicon Valley too. Well, I work there anyway. A couple years ago my company shut down, I had been with them for quite awhile. I took a contracting position thinking I would do it until something full-time came along. That was nearly 2 years ago. I'm lucky to be working at all. Many of the people I worked with at the old company are still unemployed. The job market has been hit very hard.
Don't get me wrong, there are jobs. They don't pay what they used to, and the people doing the hiring are being extremely selective about who they interview and hire. They can do that, so many are out of work. It's not unusual for an employer to get 100 resumes in a single day (or less) for an opening. I know I'm sounding very negative, but I would be doing you a major disservice as a native Californian if I didn't at least warn you what you might be getting yourself into.
The upside is that it's beautiful country, lots of things to see and do. If you want to be on the go all the time, this is the place to come. The weather in this area is wonderful, it's nice almost year round. And if you have the urge for snow, a two hour drive will get you there. The people here are pretty nice, we're a little weird, but I think the rest of the country expects that from us. As far as work, the bean counters say that the job market is supposed to start improving by the end of this year, and get even better in 2004.
My suggestion to you for what it's worth, would be to check some of the job websites first. Try monster.com, brassring.com, and careerbuilder.com. Those three are about the best for this and the southern Cal areas. If you search this area, look in San Jose, the Peninsula, Santa Clara, the East Bay, and the Tri-Valley. Those would be your best bet for any available jobs. The sites will walk you thru how to post your resume and setup your searches.
I hope I haven't bummed you out. I just really want you to know what you might be getting into. California would love to have you, but more important, I want to see you make it.
