In North America, animated films (or cartoons) are just meant for kids. In Japan, it's meant for all ages & there are lots of X-rated animes too - not my taste. But the good animes meant for adults (that aren't nasty stuff) are incredibly beautiful & well done. If you watch a few, it'll make you think of animated films in an entirely diff light. You'll never think 'cartoons' any more. And it's not choppy like cartoons are but well done, exquistely executed films that are works of art.
Princess Mononoke & Spirited Away are more light-hearted than many, with a happier ending. too.
