News story-- central park jogger case

Posted by Tabitha on December 20, 2002, at 1:21:09

Does anyone else remember the central park jogger case from late 80s? the one where they said a pack of young men went on a rampage--all the stories used the term "wilding"-- and gang-raped and beat a woman jogger nearly to death. now the news says DNA evidence proves all 5 of the guys convicted are innocent, and their confessions were coerced, and really some other guy (acting alone I think, though it didn't really say) actually did it. (The woman had no memory of the attack, either from trauma or head injury or both, so she did not identify them.)

I remember the sensational stories from that, and how it was seen as some kind of signal of the downfall of civilization or something, and there were pictures of all the teenage guys who were charged, and horrible details of her injuries. A big spread in Time magazine and everywhere else. Can you believe it didn't really happen that way at all? I feel duped, because that story really stuck with me and terrified me.

I saw this on CNN, or just Google on 'central park jogger' to see it. I wish somebody would be brave enough to re-publish some of the original coverage alongside this news, as a lesson to us.
