Hi Nikki,
This is what several of my coworkers do:
They have a plain sofa and one or two inflatable air beds. When guests visit, they simply put the air beds on the floor and inflate with an electric pump. Air beds are inexpensive (about USD$40 for good ones) AND they are more comfortable than sofa-beds AND they store easily when not in use.
My wife and I made the MISTAKE of getting a sofa-bed when we purchased our furnature. Now we both want to get rid of it and buy a simple sofa -- the sofa is uncomfortable AND the bed is uncomfortable. We already have the air beds which guests use. (We give them a choice, and it is unanimous in favor of the air beds).
I have a feeling that since it is mum's money, it is also mum's choice, though.
