(This is not a faith post!)
The thread title, though certainly something we all say--Alii just used it, comes from a quote by Rabbi Hillel. It's an important quote, so I wanted to share, in case some of you hadn't heard it.
"If I am not for myself, who will be for me? And if I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?"
I have my students paraphrase this, and they seem to have a difficult time with it. I don't know why. To me, it says what it means better than so many other things, and the meaning is a pearl.
If I don't stand up for myself, who's going to stand for me? (If I don't show I value my self-worth, who will think I'm worthy?) And if I stand up only for myself and not for others, what kind of person am I? And I must start now.
Maybe some of you can use this? I know I can.
