Here's something that I cut out of some newspaper article years ago and keep on the bulletin board in my kitchen:


The saying in the oil-rich Murchison family of Texas is, "Money is like manure. Pile it up and it stinks like hell, but spread it around and it does a lot of good."

"If you have money," Elizabeth Meyer said "you know that money can't cure fundamental human loneliness. If you don't have it, you still have the hope and illusion that it can.

People who don't have it can delude themselves. That's why the wealthy have this incredible despair. They have it all, and they know how little it really is."

This makes it sound as if, all things considered, the prudent person given a choice would not elect to be burdened with wealth. But, for all his research, Sedgewick is unwilling to go that far. "It's useful" he acknowledged, "to have enough money to feel safe, because the world is a perilous place".
