airports and medication

Hey,
If you go through customs at an airport do they take your medication out and look at it ?? I'm going on a trip soon and I don't want the people I'm with to know that I am taking medication. I feel its a private thing. So what do I do, just put it in the suitcase and hope it doesn't get lost ??
