The best place to get information is from IRS Publication 502. It explains the "floor" you must meet before you can begin deducting expenses, etc. As far as IRS publications goes, it is not too bad -- it can be found at:

I am willing to try to answer specific questions -- I'll be dancing that "giving advice" line, but if the questions are technical, I don't count that as advice, so I should be okay. That probably doesn't make sense to you, but in the legal world, all that gobbledygook does! Hopefully, you will find all you need in the publication -- it is complete, that I can assure you.
