I should have read the rest of this thread...I guess there is another "Dammit" dog out there.
I knew someone who named their cat Dink. This was just crass, but is was pretty funny when the cat needed a prescription for worms or something, and there on on the bottle of pills was his name: Dink.
My cat's name is Falconer. It's an unusual name. I didn't name him. An ex-girlfriend did. Apparently George Clooney was in a short-lived television series called "Sisters". His character's name was "Falconer". I hated the show (I used to call it "Blisters" to indicate how I felt about it), but only was aware of it _after_ George Clooney had left it for another show (ER, I suppose). She (the ex) watched it through its entire run, and that's how she heard the name "Falconer". Anyway, when it came time to pick a name for the cat, she suggested "Falconer", and I instantly thought it sounded cool. Maybe too many syllables for a cat name, but still, it just seemed cool, so I said "that's perfect!", and Falconer it was. About six month's later, we're watching TV, and it's a re-run. Blisters. Atcually, she's watching, and I'm either sneering at it playfully, or reading a magazine. On the screen pops a phantasmal George Clooney. Apparently his character was killed off, and has come back from the dead to comfort one of the "sisters". I hear her say his name: Falconer.
In an instant, it hits me: My cat is named after George Clooney. Worse, it's George Clooney on a mushy TV series I can't stand. I just can't believe it. "That's where you got the name from?!? THAT'S who Falconer is?!?" I'm devastated. I feel violated and betrayed. "I'm sorry, but he's SO gorgeous." I wanna throw up. After about a week, my feelings for my cat begin to soften again. I mean, after all, it's not his fault. And not my fault either. I was duped. Meanwhile, the vet calls him Falconer, all my friends know him as Falconer. It's done. There's no going back. Even if I can never hear his name again and not think of...think of..._that show_, he's still my cat, and I've got to be a good, responsible owner to him, and give him all the love and care he deserves. I began to see him as an innocent victim, and through him and my feelings for him, I think I was able to come to terms with my own feelings of betrayal. Healing came slowly, but it came, and now I'm stronger, and we (me and the cat) are closer than we have ever been.
