I also love "Wait! Wait! DOn't tell me!" "Michael Feldman's Whaddya KNow" and "Rewind." I love radio humor and radio drama. My dial hardly ever budges from the local NPR station.
Re the "NPR monotone" (was that Kid A?): I was an announcer for a while on a non-NPR public radio station that airs classical and jazz. My friends asked me if there was some course in getting that special public radio "sound." I think that "sound" is the soothing monotone you're referring to. :)
It may however be genetic; I come from a long line of radio-folk.P.
