This is my impression. Many people have a hard time understanding just how significantly mental illness can alter a person. It's only natural they look to other explanations.
Parents these days are bombarded with anti-drugs propaganda, which can ignite latent fears that their children might be 'addicted'.
If my mum asked if I smoked crack (I don't), & she has done so in the past, I wld take it as a sign she is seriously concerned.
Perhaps the seriousness of the drug mentioned reflects the gravity of yr depression? I dunno.
