I think sometimes hearing voices can be a symptom of overwhelm and partial dissociation that is so automatic it isn't recognized. Certain medications can cause sounds in the ears - aspirin and its cousins cause ringing, for example.

Scientific America ran an article about adults who hear voices. Their conclusion was that many times the person is just fine but something in their auditory structure has shifted or is tuned into old conversations - auditory memories, if you will. The more the subjects paid attention to the voices, the less they heard. Very strange indeed.

But I'd still get the tests just to rule out anything scary. Good luck with this!
