Idealization

Posted by Toph on December 31, 2004, at 14:23:01

If object relations theory says that in child development we need to separate from the idealized parent imago, and Bob says that idealization of the group facilitator can lead to unrealistic expectations of him, then why would we want to idealize our therapists? Is it necessary that they become some vicarious parent for us that we have to see as infallible, omnipotent, sagacious, all-caring other objects?
