After a long struggle with Bipolar II and a hospitalization for suicidal impulses, I've decided to use what I've learned for the benefit of others with mental health problems. I'd like to work in the mental health field, but am unsure as to what degree I should be getting. I have a BA in anthropology/psychology, and no experience in the field (I've been at home with my kids for the past 6 years). Any advice on where to start?
~I'd like to work part time, but where, and doing what?
~I've been considering a Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and will be taking their intro course 'orientation to the counseling profession' in September.
~But maybe I don't need a Master's if I don't want to be a 'therapist' and would rather work in a psych hospital in some capacity. I like the idea of one-on-one crisis counseling. But what degree would I need to do something like that, and what are my job options?
Any thoughts at all would be appreciated. I'm excited about this but there are a lot of degrees out there and I don't want to spend a lot of time and money on a MA degree if I'd be overqualified for the job I'd really like to have.
Thanks, all! ~~Autumn~~
