AllDone was the first to respond with the correct answer.
EmmyS was the second (and only other) correct responder.

The answer is: Bye Bye Birdie

The song is sung to Conrad (a rock star) as he is drafted into the military by his adoring Fan Club.

If you've never seen Bye Bye Birdie, look for a high school near you performing it as their annual musical, or rent the video. It is wonderful fun.
