new person here, where to start?

Posted by heidi_jr36 on January 6, 2009, at 1:00:20

Hello everyone, I posted many years ago under another name, but here I am back again. i suffer from depression and Tourette's. The depression is an atypical bi-polar type; I am currently weaning off of Effexor, 112.5 mgs, suspect my tics have become worse due to it. If anyone has come across this, please advise. I also take Lamictal, 100 mg/day.

I never had a problem with loud vocal type tics, like throat clearing and noises, but the last year these have surfaced for the first time, ever. I had to leave my job, boss was less than understanding and did not want to be educated about the condition. This condition sucks; and it is so misunderstood. I wonder if I will ever be able to work with people again.

My doctor recently prescribed mecamylamine for the Tourette's, and sometimes it works very well, and sometimes it does nothing. This is another thing I cannot figure out. I know it affects the nicotine receptors in the brain. It does seem to calm me down a lot.

I do not want to go back on Haldol which has helped in the past but makes me foggy headed. i tried Abilify and it worked for awhile, then stopped.

If anyone has any input on Effexor's effect on Tourette's, mecamylamine (Inversine is brand name), or info on adult Tourette's please feel free to share it. It is difficult (but not impossible) to find info on adult Tourette's on the web. There is a lot of info about kids, and parents not wanting them on medication or wanting to go the natural route. Geez, if I had a med when I was a kid that would get rid of these stupid tics I would have welcomed it.

There is more, but will leave it at this for now; Thanks for listening and please feel free to give me input.
