Hi, welcome to Babble! It's a great place, with a lot of very supportive and knowledgeable people, and I hope you like it here enough to stick around.
I have never taken Depakote, but I know that it is associated with weight gain. Fortunately, it's one of the relatively few that seem to cause weight gain largely through controllable effects. A great deal of the weight gain from Depakote seems to be related to stomach upset, which can be addressed with over the counter acid controllers like Zantac, Axid, Pepcid, etc. The upset stomach leads to eating more to settle the stomach, which leads to weight gain -- so, if you can control the stomach upset, it is less likely to be a problem. It's certainly worth a try, though, right? If it doesn't work, you stop the acid controller, and look at other options. And your doctor should have some ideas that will help, too.
Babble's a great place, and for people who have much more experience with medications than I do, including Depakote, you can try the Medications board, located at http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/
I hope that helps, and again -- welcome to Babble!
