when thyroid tissue is removed it is possible that the parathyroid is resected too. that has the effect that the parathormone production is insufficient. the parathormone elevates the calcium levels by activating cells in the bone, resorption in the gut and the kidneys along having an effect on the phosphate concentration.
somebody can test a hypocalcaemia by beating on the fazial nerve near the tragus (in the region of the ear). A hypocalcaemia does make little jerks like here
