In my own case, I never even stopped to wonder if it was true that something unhealthy was up with Aspartame, once I started hearing that: From the time it came out, I had consumed many products containing it per day. And long before I heard anything bad about it, I had noticed a clear connection between headaches (which I do not typically suffer often at all) and how much Aspartame I had consumed.
Often, if I had the evening munchies but wanted to keep my sugar and calorie consumption lower than otherwise, I would consume several Aspartame products in a row, like hot chocolate, pudding, candies, etc. And I would wake up with a severe headache that felt distinctly different than any other. It seemed that over time the threshhold became lower on how much it would take to give me that headache.
So whether what's going on is actually dangerous or not, I won't come near it anymore. I also have been under the impression that as far as anyone knows yet, Splenda is safe. But I admit I have not researched that at all. I also have gone back to consuming regular old sugar more often than I allowed myself in my "hung up" days.
