Being a Christian and dealing with depression can sometimes seem like living in the seventh-circle of hell, as you have a lot of room to beat yourself up over things like "not pleasing God." I'm a devout Christian and regret that ten years ago, when going through a severe clinical depression when my children were small, I attended a church where the pastor publicly disavowed all psych meds, and encouraged us to "walk it out by faith." I didn't pursue the meds path out of guilt and so prolonged my depression for at least three years, I'd say.

My point is: remember St. Paul's encouragement to "walk out your own salvation, with fear and trembling." The pastor who reviled me for using drugs has never dealt with depression himself, or he wouldn't be so quick to condemn. No where in the scripture does Jesus attack the hurting, nor does He undercut our path to peace. He says of His ministry: "His yoke is EASY and his burden is LIGHT."

Remember that, and don't try anything that has to be done overnight (Stopping meds, etc.) I recommend a six-month plan of exercise and diet and looking into the alternatives re: meds which might not make you gain so much weight. I was on Serozone, which made me gain, and now on Prozac, which makes me lose. There's no telling.

I've got a libary of books like DIAC and find some of their advice healthy, but when it comes to real life, though I belong to a church and have a thriving family and do all the things required of me -- I still end up depressed sometimes and have to go back on meds. One thing it does is keep me humble.

Just ease up on that "either-or" thinking and don't let The Deceiver use accusation to make you get off a course that is good for you and your children.

Grace & peace.
