OK ,I don't profess to be an expert on the subject, but I will give you my best spin.

God never abandons His children. He does allow us to be tested, He does discipline us (though not in the sense of punishment...as in killing your child because you have sinned). He does purify and sanctify us.

How do we know? How is it different than just the "crap" of life? You have to go to the source with that one, and ask. Sometimes, God will allow us to be humbled until we recognize that WE can do nothing good without Him. It is when we try the hardest to solve our own problems, with OUR strength, that we fail and fall the hardest.

That's the irony of it all, because that is exactly what God wants us to do, to be fully reliant upon HIS strength. Does this mean we won't have bad times, or sorrows or pains? Sorry, but no, it does not. However, when we feel the worst, the most alone, the most forgotten the most tortured....THAT is when we can fall into the arms of God and find a peace of mind that is so incredible that it eclipses our ability to understand.

Why do we think somtimes "Hey God, I'm dying here, why won't you come help me?". You can find the answer to that in John 5:6. Why wait 38 years in hell before realizing "I WANT to be well, I WANT to be healed." But God does expect us to take that first step, the first step that is often the most difficult one we ever choose to take.
