I was lucky to grow up with parents who loved me and thought I was wonderful, and had an early history of excelling at school, not in sports, certainly. In fact, my parents method of discipline was to expect so much from me, and be so surprised when I didn't live up to it.
I tend to be sensitive to the opinion of others, even when I really shouldn't be. It would be overwhelming if I weren't able to step back and assess my actions on my terms. Sometimes I find that I could have done better and set about doing what I can to fix it, and sometimes I think I did ok. If I didn't have some reasonable sense of self worth, that tendency to be overly upset at criticism or rejection would be paralyzing to me, instead of just a major problem. :)
