I agree with Hombre. I like glycinate and citrate.
I take mag glycinate every morning. It doesn't make me sleepy so it seems it seems a good choice for daytime calming. The capsules made by bluebonnet are pretty easy to swallow.
Citrate used to help with my insomnia (made me a little sleepy at night), but doesn't seem to work as well anymore (maybe because of the other stuff I'm taking). I bought the powder form by Now Foods since it seemed like the best bang for the buck, plus it's easy to adjust the dosing. You can mix it in a small amount of beverage (tea or juice works well; milk doesn't). You have to drink it pretty quickly or the sediment will collect at the bottom. (After a while, it turns dark -- weird.) The taste is sour, not bad. I have also used a combo calcium/mag citrate in liquid form which was OK. (Many flavors available.) You can also get pills, of course.
Glycinate is supposed to be less likely to cause diarrhea than citrate, but if you have any sleep issues, I'd probably try citrate first. Actually, I'd say try them both and see which one works better for you. I've also seen people mention preferring other forms, I think malate, and maybe orotate. There are a lot of old posts on magnesium in the archives. Do a search and you'll find them.
