ALA is one of only two substances that can cross the brain barrier to chelate heavy metals out (or into the brain if the body load is higher than the brain). Since heavy metal load in the nervous system has depression as a very common result, ALA can be helpful by removing the cause of the depression.
If any metal accumulation is suspected...amalgam fillings history, ever being around a broken flourescent light bulb, industrial, whatever...care needs to be taken with ALA by starting at extremely small doses (ones that you cannot feel anything from it), and slowly ramp up, the whole while taking it every 3 hours. Its halflife is 3 hours. If it dislodges metals, and you go past 3 to 4 hours without a dose, those metals will be dumped where ever they happen to be in your body or brain at the time.
As with all substances, I have no doubt there are probably a multitude of mechanisms by which ALA could be either helpful or hurtful depending on the person, the situation, and the dosing strategy. A person who does have metals, whether they know it or not, who doses ALA wrongly can get themselves much sicker from all the redepositing of those metals. The ability to chelate metals is probably only one function of many that it does.
