Is St. John's Wort similar to SSRIs?

Posted by Garnet71 on March 10, 2009, at 20:25:31

SSRIs take away my anxiety, but make me feel depressed, unmotivated, fatigued, and miserable. Does St. John's Wort generally have the effect of SSRIs--meaning, if I don't react favorably to SSRIs, does this mean I wouldn't react favorably to SJW?

Effexor and Wellbutrin worked the best in the past, but Wellbutrin doesn't positively affect me any longer, and I think Effexor is poisonous and hate the side effects. However, I had PTSD/depression back then; since coming off ADs, I developed panic disorder/GAD.

I think I need to increase my dopamine levels, and am not sure if the Ritalin is the best way. It helps with ADD symptoms, but wears off fast, and after only one month into it-its not as effective as it once was. By 6 pm, the effect is gone then I crave sugar and sweets every evening. I haven't been taking the Ritalin it every day. Still taking Buspirone 30 mg a day.

I want to ask my PDoc about St. Johns Wort, but I have a feeling he wont have much to say about it and won't want me to discontinue my current regiment.
