Fish oil and anxiety revisited

Posted by saturn on September 5, 2007, at 19:54:32

I know this topic has been discussed here many times and I've probably read all of the relevant posts, but would like to ask again if anyone has any further input regarding whether fish oil can cause anxiety.

See, I'm not exactly sure if fish oil is causing my anxiety. There are times when I'm perfectly calm when on fish oil. I've taken various doses and formulations for about 18 months (currently about 1 gram EPA, 140 mg DHA per day---I've also taken taurine and magnesium with no benefit).

I have a suspicion that the fish oil may be exacerbating a more benign baseline level of anxiety.

It seems obvious just to stop the fish oil and see how it goes...but I've stopped for brief periods of days before with no noticeable change. It actually seems a bit challenging to really tease out whether the fish oil is causing or exacerbating an already present anxiety...or helping or even having no effect at all, so I'd just like to ask for any thoughts on how to approach this or just about fish oil and anxiety in general.

Thanks...Peace...Saturn.
