I was reading on a psychiatrist website the other day that once sam-e starts working, it is important to lower the dose. It has an accumulating effect that can lead to overstimulation if you keep taking the same dose day after day. Take whatever dose is needed to get a good effect, but then decrease the dose after that.
They said that once a decent response has been achieved, amounts as little as 25mg to 100mg a day can be sufficient to maintain the good response without an accumulating overstimulation effect. Even though the pills are enteric coated, this psychiatrist says you can cut them into halves or quarters and they still work fine without being destroyed in the stomach, and you can wrap the unused pieces in plastic wrap which will stay good for a few days.
Solgar has a product called SAM-e Complex, which is a combination of B vitamins and 25mg SAM-e. That might be an option for maintaining a lower dose. The product is designed to supply SAM-e as well as the nutrients needed for the body to create more of its own SAM-e.
