Most antidepressants work through their effects on sleep parameters. Most AD's decrease rem sleep. Decreasing rem sleep alters the sensitivity of the d2 receptors as do the tricyclics and other AD's

There are a number of doctors who still treat depression solely through sleep deprivation.

Sleep deprivation also increases hippocampal serotonin content which lasts many days after the sleep deprivation.

I think that most AD's are just mimicking sleep deprivation.

I think it is worth research. For myself, the antidepressant effect of sleep deprivation is unparalelled by the fanciest and most advanced antidepressant therapies at their highest doses.
