Your doctor is staying abreast of some good, but fringe (i.e. less conventional) research. Yes, this can be a very effective supplement. No, there is little (if any) risk from trying it.
If you buy the bulk, it has a sharp acetic acid odour....it is a fragile chemical, and should be kept dry (make sure it has a dessicant), and in a dark cool place. Tightly closed, in the fridge, for example.
