Seems innocuous enough, but the mary/merry/murray thing is one of my earliest memories of learning to not trust teachers. I was a Pennsylvania transplant to southern Virginia schools. During a lesson (third grade, I think) about homonyms (referred to as homophones now), I told the teacher that I didn't think mary and merry were homonyms, and given the speech differences between the two regions, I would be correct about Pennsylvania. The teacher, being too stupid to realize simple facts, dismissed me as being wrong. One of a gazillion incidents in my so-called education.
