I think there are significantly more examples of kindness, support and reassurance on Babble than hurtful, disrespectful and uncivil posts. So do we need to change, Bob, for you to show more of a presence here?

> I guess I just found it odd that Bob seemed to be putting conditions on his returning and/or staying. It's kind of like a cop saying he or she will only protect the community if all citizens try to be good. Frankly, I'd like to invest more time on Babble again someday because I hopefully will get something out of participating, not so that Bob will return.

I agree, it's more positive than negative here. But I think the negativity is still significant. Like a medication's benefits could outweigh its side effects, but its side effects could still be significant.

I meant "you all" in the sense of "y'all", not in the sense of "every one of you".

It's interesting that you saw that as a condition. In an ideal world, the cop would try to make the community safe whether or not the citizens did what they could themselves, but if it seemed to him they didn't, I could imagine him feeling powerless and going to Dunkin' Donuts.

I guess I see it as a feedback loop, which is conditional in a way. If I moderate, y'all may be more likely to reassure other posters, and if y'all are more supportive, I may be more present. To be the change I wish to see, I'm trying to be more present.

My rephrase: if we work together for a common goal, we'll all get more out of participating.
