Consistency in blocks - Zazenduckie

Posted by Dinah on November 30, 2006, at 18:43:12

I apologize. I had thought your question was rhetorical, with the purpose of making a point. I didn't realize you wanted an answer to it.

I don't think it would be civil to answer your question about a particular block. However, I don't mind commenting on blocks in general.

I consider my blocks to be consistent, and don't find any internal sense of inconsistancy. I am sorry that you do. I imagine it's difficult to read another person's mind.

If you're asking if I block more quickly when I'm angry, the answer is no, I don't. When I find myself in the grip of strong emotions, I generally defer to another deputy or to Dr. Bob.

If you're asking if I favor my friends, I'm afraid the answer is no. I block and PBC friends, and while most understand that it's part of the job, I've lost a few friends that way. It's not fun to wade in when friends are involved, but I know that I agreed to do that when I agreed to be a deputy.

I think you'll find that overall, I don't block that often, and prefer to give PBC's. But if I recall giving a PBC recently about the same topic and I don't think that the poster is, for example, new and having difficulty understanding the rules, I will block. If I've erred on the side of mercy, I know Dr. Bob can (and has) adjust accordingly. And vice versa of course.

I understand that you might still find my actions unpredictable, and I understand that that is perhaps inevitable since you can't share my brain. Would it be any use to express the wish that you would credit me with the integrity and honor to do my best to be fair and consistent?

I'll at least say that I credit myself with the integrity and honor to do my best to be fair and consistent.

Dinah, answering as deputy to Dr. Bob
