Posting 'personal information' from previous posts

Posted by Tomatheus on June 20, 2006, at 0:43:23

This is in response to gardenergirl's post in the thread titled "Taking Nardil to the EXTREME [lots of exclamation points]" on the meds board.

Like Vader40, I am also guilty of having posted Ace's e-mail address in a message that I wrote to him. I did this because Ace had previously (publicly) posted his e-mail address in a message that I was able to find in the Psycho-Babble archives. I had e-mailed him and did not receive a reply from him, so I sent him a message on Psycho-Babble asking if he was still using the address.

It was my assumption that because Ace had given out his e-mail address in a previous Babble post (which, as all of us know, is in the public domain) that another mention of his e-mail address would not have qualified as giving out his personal information without his permission. I personally have given out one of my e-mail addresses in several posts that I have made, and it's always been my understanding that once I made that address available on Babble that it was no longer "personal" but public (because, once again, everything on Babble is assumed to be in the public domain).

I understand that it be a violation of one's privacy to give out truly "personal" information about a Psycho-Babble user, but it's always been my assumption that a user would not publicly post his/her e-mail address in a Psycho-Babble message if he/she did not want that e-mail address to be publicly known. So, I guess what I'm asking for is a clarification on this matter: is a Psycho-Babble user's e-mail address considered to be "personal information" if the user already made the address public in an older Psycho-Babble message?
